If your boss offered to grant one wish for
a special perk, that extra emolument to enhance your job, what would you ask for?
Telecommuting, training and flextime
privileges were the top three choices of area tech workers who have taken part in an
ongoing, online salary survey conducted by The Washington Post's Web site,
washingtonpost.com. Also on the dream list were specifics such as personal coffee bars and
permission to bring your dog to work.
One survey question asks what benefits or
privileges would be most appealing: "What about a company-sponsored skybox? A
personal trainer? A 24-hour barista?"
Sorting the answers of nearly 3,500
randomly selected survey-takers into 11 perk categories reveals workers' desire to escape
the toils of commuting through flextime and telecommuting.
Some replies were on the hedonistic side:
"A car and chicks and dental plan," said one tech firm employee. "Back
rubs, good benefits," added a 32-year-old project engineer.
Some were very basic: "A damn water
cooler!" said a local area network administrator. "To be greated like a
grown-up," pleaded a 47-year-old software engineer.
And one 20-year-old technical support
worker with a metaphysical streak simply asked for "The Truth."
