  • 41% of federal employees indicate they currently telework - up from 19% at the same time last year
  • 43% started teleworking in the last year
  • IT professionals have significantly expanded technical support for telework initiatives over the past year.
  • 32% of IT professionals indicate that their agency has started or expanded a telework program in the last year

Roadblocks to telework

  • 53% of federal IT professionals feel that information security is the primary challenge
  • 26% say service and support
  • 16% say collaboration
  • 6% of federal IT professionals believe that federal telework requirements hamper compliance with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA)

Continuity of operations (COOP)

  • 87% of teleworkers would be able to continue their work via telework if their office were closed due to a storm or some other catastrophe
  • But only 62% of non-teleworkers would be able to do the same

Other Findings

  • either very satisfied or satisfied with their current jobs: 91% for teleworkers; 80% for non teleworkers
  • of non teleworkers, 84% would telework if given the option
  • 46% say their agency has written telework policies, up from 34% in 2005
  • 54% of federal employees report that their managers view telework favorably, compared to 45% in 2005
  • Federal agencies primarily utilize Web-based applications and intranet/extranet solutions to support collaboration for remote workers

Why respondents prefer telework

  • elimination of their commute (80%)
  • improvement in work flexibility (68%)

Deterrents to telework among Non Teleworkers

  • 47% said isolation is the primary deterrent
  • 42% who simply do not want to be at home
  • 40% say concerns about productivity (down from 62% in 2005)

Primary security solutions for teleworkers

  • 66% use Anti-virus software
  • 61% use network security hardware
  • 50% use authentication/PKI/encryption technologies
