Introduction

Depending on the people, the situation, and on how it's applied, telework (and information technology) can be bad for human interaction.

For example, as we get more 'wired', transactions like tele-banking, tele-education, tele-work, tele-medicine etc. can decrease face-to-face interaction. This is not so good if you believe that people are social beings.

Some of the negative symptoms include workaholism, "on-line obsession" or feelings of isolation and being 'out the loop'.

We can counteract some of these problems is we first recognize and accept the risk, then by dealing with the symptoms. True, we need to be disciplined about 'shutting it off' at the end of the day, or "getting a life", and not staying too long in front of "the boob tube" (computer monitor as well as TV) etc.  But we humans are complex animals, and the solutions are more complicated than that.  So stay tuned for more information.
