United States cities & communities

US cities are very active in promoting and using the benefits of telework & telecommuting. Here are some examples. Contact us if you know of others.

General

  - Congressional Telecommute Bill will offer incentives and pollution credits to 5 US cities
  - The company town: Better sit down if you're still skeptical about the huge impact of telework
Arizona
  - Phoenix has developed some great resources to provide businesses with the tools they need to implement telework programs or grow the ones they already have.
California
- Santa Barbara County considers dangling $10-a-month carrots to encourage telecommuting
Colorado
  - Denver: Denver Regional Council of Governments
Connecticut
  - Stamford:  Stamford mayor puts brakes on telecommuting by city workers
Florida
  - Tampa Bay: Telework Tampa Bay program offers guidance for employers and employees
Minnesota
  - eWorkPlace Telework Twin Cities is a state-sponsored telework program for Twin City metro area employers and individuals
Massachusetts
  - Boston mayor urges employers to let their workers telecommute during Democratic National Convention
Georgia
  - Atlanta Teleworking takes off in Atlanta
Oregon
  - Portland Mayor Vera Katz: "City Council gives wholehearted endorsement to telecommuting as an option for city employees ... Telecommuting is one more way government can help citizens get more value for their tax dollars, while helping the environment at the same time. This is the kind of innovative solution to maintaining livability that Oregon's been known for."
  - Portland gives telecommuting a thumbs up following a six-month test (pdf file)
Southeast Michigan Council of Governments
  - The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) has a telecommuting and rideshare program
Texas
  - Austin, Texas City of Austin offers a telework program for its own employees
Utah
  - Salt Lake City initiates Telework 2000: a public-private sector consortium that can be demonstrated to the world during the 2002 Winter Olympics
Virginia - Fairfax County
  - Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce Honors Teleworkers Chamber recognizes companies attempting transportation solutions through teleworking
  - Montgomery County County encourages businesses to set up teleworking programs. Incentives include a tax credit of up to $2,000 to help companies purchase computers used for working at home. Mirrors similar initiatives in Maryland,  California, New Jersey and Georgia. Companies must ensure computer is used at home at least 78 days per year, or 1.5 days a week
  - Fairfax County March 04: Fairfax County government one of the few if not the only one to meet a regional goal of having 10% of its eligible work force telecommuting at least once a week
Washington DC
  - July 04: The Metropolitan Council of Governments (Washington DC ) has come up with a new way of counting telecommuters and that means the number of people fitting that category has declined by 25%

It will now only include workers who spend the entire day teleworking or using a satellite center as a part time office in the count. Sales and repair people, consultants and other professionals who were once included among the estimated 400,000 people who were classified as telecommuters no longer make the cut. About 11% of the people employed in the National-Capital area are regular telecommuters, including roughly 12% of the federal work force.

  - Feb 04 The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) announces program to get cars off the road and enhances quality of life, it provides firms with an important means of business continuity when a crisis or inclement weather occurs. Program aims to encourage 50,000 more commuters to telework, to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by eliminating 17,000 daily vehicle trips and 550,000 vehicle miles traveled by June 30, 2005. Will give free customized outreach and training for employers who register, free 60-day free trials at one of 16 telework centers for federal agencies.
  - Washington Metropolitan Telework Center
  - Washington, DC wants 1 in 5 to telecommute by 2005. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) adopts a "telework" goal of 20% of the regional workforce by 2005
