The call was made by Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower Hawazi Daipi at the launch of a new book titled "Can We Have It All?" on Tuesday. The answer is "yes" for 12 organisations, whose success stories on worklife strategies are shared in the book by the Employer Alliance. Hawazi Daipi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower and Health, said: "Apart from improved talent attraction and retention, implementing worklife strategies can also contribute to higher productivity and better customer service through increased employee engagement and lower absenteeism." On average, an organisation faces an inevitable productivity loss of seven per cent, according to a global study of over 5,000 companies by USbased Corporate Executive Board. It blames this on the loss of top talent and flawed recruiting plans. Mr Hawazi said with competition for talent heating up during the economic upturn, employers should look to worklife strategies to differentiate themselves and their businesses. Worklife strategies play an important role in many organisations in Western countries. But in an economicallydriven country like Singapore, worklife balance has not quite caught on yet. Experts said the key is to change managements mindset. While costs may be an issue, companies need to look beyond immediate gains. Grace Lim, head of Human Resource and Administration at HSL Constructor, said: "For example, if you want to implement telecommuting, you have to buy a laptop, you have to set up a remote server. These are initial costs involved, but the returns and the reward that you get at the end of it is higher productivity, increased loyalty and retention as well." So managers must be on the same page and play a bigger role in promoting worklife integration. Ms Lim agreed, saying: "One of the problems that we face is in educating our managers, in letting them know that worklife is important to their people, the people they are managing. "A lot of my managers have been working in a very traditional environment for a very long time, so worklife is something very new to them. So we will have to play a very big role in transmitting this message across, to coach them continuously about the importance worklife integration." Ms Lim added that there are some programmes that can work for SMEs too. She added: "Flexihours is something I think is very workable because its about basically coming in an hour later and leaving the office an hour later. So that would be very applicable to a lot of jobs." Bigger firms like audit and tax firm KPMG also found ways to improve working processes. Stephen Tjoa, executive director of People, Performance & Culture at KPMG, said: "We are a professional services firm and, of course, a lot of our time is dependent on our client demands and so there is always the possibility that people work relatively long hours. "So we need to help them work more efficient hours. So one of the things we did was to remove overtime, so that we make sure people plan their schedules and make sure they can go home on time, if they could."
