Richmond Hill
Richmond Hill, Ontario implements successful telework program for its employees

In March 2000, Richmond Hill — a town of 135, 996 is situated just north of Toronto — implemented a telework pilot program, to provide a flexible working environment to benefit staff, at the same time as meeting environmental objectives set by the Town to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing employee commuting trips.

Reportedly the first Canadian city to implement a telework program, the city evaluated its program one year later. The results are highly encouraging.

The town reports improvements in productivity, job satisfaction, internal
communications, and a reduction in work-related stress. It found the program helpful in supporting the goal of reducing highway congestion and harmful auto emissions, making it better for environment.

Based on these positive impacts on staff and management, as well as towards reducing pollution, the pilot program is now being extended on a permanent basis.

Richmond Hill’s initiative should serve as a role model for larger centers
like Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal.
